Ok, going to take a second from this whole scam thing and I’m going to report how my Warhammer Online experience is going so far. I bought the game yesterday after I debated it for a little as I wasn’t sure I really wanted to get back into another World of Warcraft grind fest. I bit the bullet and got it.
One of the reason for holding back was because of the system requirements. They aren’t too bad, but I haven’t upgraded my computer is a couple years, and the last major game release, my graphics card couldn’t handle it. It was an old Nvidia 6200. Perfect for World of Warcraft, but nothing else.
I head to Bestbuy, they had non in stock. I couldn’t even find an area that they might have had them. Actually, that’s not true, they did have some, they had a ton sitting in the customer service area, but those were for the people who reserved them. If I were Bestbuy, If a customer doesn’t pick up the game withing 24 hours of game release, they should start selling to the general public.
Anyway, I headed over to Gamestop. They have a bunch, and my brother and I were the only one’s to ask for the game that day. Damn, I was beginning to think this game won’t be that popular. I give a copy to my brother and take one myself, and head home, but that was after we picked up some Burger King. Which by the way, thanks for the extra Whopper Jr., sucks for the guy who was supposed to get it behind us, but there was no point in returning it, as they would end up throwing it away anyway.
I dropped my brother off, and get home myself. Thank goodness he lives around the block. So I get in, pop the DVD disc 1 in , ( we planned ahead and opened everything up in the car ) and begin to install. Everything was going smoothly, the game was only 2 DVD’s and it’s seemed to install pretty quick. I message comes up and it wants the second DVD. I Pop in it, and it starts taking a while to read the second disc. HRMM, the tray opens again and the game wants the second disc again. Damn, so I repeat this step about 10 times thinking that one of the times it would read it, after all, the first disc was fine what would make the second disc any different.
It beats the &!@# our of me, but my second disc doesn’t “work”. I called my brother and as it turns out his worked fine. I tell him to bring his copy over and I’ll try his. Same result. WTF!
So I go online, do a search for “Warhammer Online disc 2″. Sure enough, the second DVD isn’t working for some (alot) of people. I spend about 30 minutes online trying to get to the bottom of this crap, which I end up back to Mythic to see what they have to say. I tried calling the number, but the support number was ringing busy, gee wonder why. By the way, none of the online forums were any help. Nobody knows shit as to how to fix this. But I do (now).
I find some info on Mythic’s site, there are about 10-15 scenarios (that’s a pun by the way) about why the disc won’t read. I picked the one where I might need a firmware upgrade.
I go to Samsung and try to find some firmware upgrades. I find one, try to apply it. Before I applied it, I did verify my drive worked, as I put some other CD’s/DVD’s in the drive and they all worked. It was just the disc 2 dvd that wouldn’t work. I reboot my system, everything comes online, now my dvd drive stops working. LOL firmware upgrade didn’t work.
At this time I pretty much figured that my DVD player was too old and needed to be upgraded. That’s the best solution people, just buy a new DVD drive. Chances are you’ll end up needing to get a new one anyway, seeing how EA and these other companies want to ram this DRM crap down our throats. Whatever was on the second disc, my DVD player didn’t like it.
I bought a new 20x DVD writer from Sony, at Bestbuy for about 50 bucks. While I was at it, I got the PNY 7600 gs. I only have AGP so that was the best they had. I buy everything , get back home, install everything and I reboot.
Another snag, the computer is taking FOREVER to reboot. I button it a couple time, and finally decide to just let it sit. It eventually gets moving. I have no Idea what that was all about, but my system is working again. I reinstall Warhammer, and it finally reads the second disc, no problem. Not to mention it install almost twice as fast with the new drive.
Now that the game in installed, I run it and it starts with the patch process. No bad, for the size of this game, the install and patch part was actually quicker than installing World of Warcraft.
That’s all for now. I’ll make another post about how the game itself is in a little bit. But I can tell you now, If you like battle grounds and PVP, Warhammer Online will be right up your ally.
Second part coming soon…
